The size of the beams depend upon the span used; oak being stronger than pine can be smaller in dimension; however, sizes usually are 8"x8" or 10"x14"
Finishing of timbers
Timbers can be left either "rough" sawn or "plain" and a coating of "breathable" urethane is applied.

How long does it take to build a Timberframe house
There are severable variables to take into account when considering how long it will take, such as, the size of the home, the design and interior customization, and crew size. On average, it takes about six months to complete a Timberframe home.
Estimated costs
Total estimated costs, from the foundation up, are about $125/sq. ft.
How do "checks" affect the beam ?
Timberframes are cut "green" and there is some associated shrinkage and checking. Checking runs in the same direction as the grain and does not affect the structural integrity of the Timberframe.
Can I use a "standard" foundation for the Timberframe Home ?
Yes - just as long as there is a standard "deck" or cap on the foundation.
